Opening This Week - July 21, 2017

Wide Releases:

Dunkirk

Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Runtime: 1hr, 46mins
Action, Drama, History, War
PG-13
Trailer

Starring: Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy

The early reports have been very positive for Christopher Nolan's WWII thriller. Some have gone as far as to call it the best movie of the year, others are calling for Nolan's first Best Director Oscar nomination. Either way it's looking good at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite being underwhelmed by a couple of his more recent films, I consider myself a Nolan fan and am certainly looking forward to this one. It helps that the reception has been so overwhelmingly positive so far.

Girls Trip

Directed by: Malcolm D. Lee
Runtime: 2hrs, 2mins
Comedy
R
Trailer

Starring: Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish

The good news is there's a female lead comedy with fairly high expectations available for those that want it. The bad news is Rough Night, the other female lead comedy that vied for a similar audience, underperformed at the box office earlier this summer. Nevertheless I can see it doing fairly well as an alternative to Nolan's war epic.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Directed by: Luc Besson
Runtime: 2hrs, 17mins
Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
PG-13
Trailer

Starring: Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke

Valerian gets my pick as the film to worry about this week as far as box office numbers are concerned. Perhaps it'll do well with a younger audience, and Luc Besson is a mostly well liked filmmaker. However, the overwhelming reaction I've heard toward this movie is, "it looks too weird," and, "that looks like it cost a lot to make." I'm sure it did cost a lot. Besson himself claimed the film would have to gross at least $350 million worldwide in order to break even and justify the sequel he hopes to make. That's a fairly tall order, but certainly not impossible. It's a film I can see doing well internationally even if it disappoints here.
