If there’s one thing Hollywood loves - or at least thinks audiences love - it’s reboots and Dwayne Johnson. They’re right about one of those things. The Rock has proven himself a franchise rescuer/rebuilder. He’s great in comedy and action and audiences genuinely do love him, and all of that makes him a perfect fit here. The question is, did anyone really want a modern movie franchise based on this 80’s TV show? There’s some solid star power and an aggressive ad campaign, so we’ll find out the answer to that question soon enough.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Speaking of questioning the necessity of the continuation of a series, Jack Sparrow and company are back for a fifth film in a franchise that started way back in 2003 based on an amusement park ride. OK, Ok, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have some fondness for the original trilogy of films - call them a guilty pleasure, but they came along in a time in my life when I just happened to have grown particularly fascinated by pirate history and mythology.

I was not a fan of 2011’s On Stranger Tides. It didn’t do well with critics or audiences (at least in the states). Perhaps that’s why they waited six years and brought back even more of the cast of the original trilogy (namely Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley) for what’s supposedly the final film in the series. It doesn’t hurt that Javier Bardem is on board to play the villain and Norwegian duo Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (known for their academy award nominated film Kon-Tiki) are on-board to direct.

What may just make this a fun time at the theater is it’s seeming return to form. The ghostly villain and cursed crew hearken back to The Curse of the Black Pearl - the producers and directors have openly expressed a desire to recapture the feel of the first film. Add in the series charming sense of humor, lovable characters, and big action set pieces and they may just have something here. As usual, we’ll have to wait and see.
