Opening This Week - March 17, 2017

Wide Releases:

Beauty and the Beast

Directed by: Bill Condon
Runtime: 2hrs, 9mins
Family, Fantasy, Musical
PG
Trailer

Starring: Emma Watson. Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad

For the most part, these live-action remakes of classic Disney films have been greatly appreciated by both fans and critics. For Beauty and the Beast, they added a few enhancements, a few new songs, and a great cast. Nevertheless, there are signs that this one might be considered the first misfire. With a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, it's still looking mostly positive, but the reviews are far more mixed than expected. Certainly, they're more mixed than the last few Disney remakes. Still, with this cast, the beautiful visuals, and the great songs we know and love, I have the feeling this will still be a classic for a new generation.

T2 Trainspotting

Directed by: Danny Boyle
Runtime: 1hr, 57mins
Drama
R
Trailer

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle

Here's another film getting a sequel far too long after the original. A lot of the conversation surrounding this film will, no doubt, be whether or not we needed a sequel at all. It's also said that despite all the hijinks, this film delves into melancholy and spends a good amount of time there whether you like it or not. Nevertheless, fans are sure to enjoy spending more time with this likable cast.

__________

The Belko Experiment

Directed by: Greg McLean
Runtime: 1hr, 28mins
Action, Horror, Thriller
R
Trailer

Starring: John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn, Adria Arjona, John C. McGinley

The interesting name involved in this project is that of writer James Gunn (of Guardians of the Galaxy fame). Yet he seems an unlikely accomplice in this horror, thriller about a social experiment involving a game of kill or be killed set in a high-rise corporate office. That isn't to say that it won't be good, but that remains to be seen. Early reviews aren't looking great, and its box office won't be helped by the lacking ad campaign. It's coming out this weekend and this is the first I've heard of it. Considering that, I have a hard time believing it'll fare well against more well known fare like Beauty and Beast and T2 Trainspotting (even if these are all catering to very different audiences).
