Opening This Week - February 10

Wide Releases:

Fifty Shades Darker

Directed by: James Foley
Runtime: 1hr, 55mins
Drama, Romance
R
Trailer

Starring: Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Eric Johnson,

Kim Basinger is on board for the next film in the Fifty Shades franchise. She's playing the woman who initially romanced Christian, and supposedly causes problems for Anastasia. I'll be honest, I have zero familiarity with the novels or the first film and no interest in seeing the follow up. And I don't see that changing.

__________

John Wick: Chapter 2

Directed by: Chad Stahelski
Runtime: 2hrs, 2mins
Action, Thriller
R
Trailer

Starring: Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Ruby Rose, Bridget Moynahan, Laurence Fishburne

At some point in this film Laurence Fishburne had better tell Keanu Reeves that he is the one. But on a more serious note, John Wick was an excellent action film. In fact, it was probably one of the best revenge films in ages. The action and visual style of the film was awe inspiring throughout, and I couldn't be more excited to see the follow up!

__________

The LEGO Batman Movie

Directed by: Chris McKay
Runtime: 1hr, 44mins
Animation, Action, Adventure
PG
Trailer

Starring: Will Arnett, Jenny Slate, Ralph Fiennes, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Rosario Dawson,

The LEGO movie was a very enjoyable film, so I'm glad to see the franchise expanding. And some are saying it's the best Batman movie since The Dark Knight. Okay, that's not saying too much is it? Nevertheless, this film is about as star-studded as they come - seriously have a look at the list of names on IMDB. This would easily have been my most anticipated movie of the week if it hadn't been opening alongside John Wick: Chapter 2. Though something tells me that won't hurt its box office numbers.

This inspirational film looks to be a well timed release considering current events. It's the true story of the Prince of Botswana who married a white British woman in the 1940's amid international backlash and political machinations that sought to end their relationship.

__________

Bornless Ones

Directed by: Alexander Babaev
Runtime: 1hr, 21mins
Horror
Not Rated
Trailer

Starring: Margaret Judson, Devin Goodsell, Michael Johnston

Director Alexander Babaev has been up-front about the fact that Bornless Ones is heavily inspired by Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. So maybe he should be receiving a little something depending on how well this film does. It's about a girl who recruits some friends to help her move to a remote house in order to be closer her brother - who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. But of course, because this is a horror film, the house is haunted.

Directed by: Damien Macé, Alexis Wajsbrot
Runtime: 1hr, 23mins
Horror, Thriller

Trailer

Starring: Sienna Guillory, Gregg Sulkin, Garrett Clayton

This horror thriller looks to combine phone pranks with concepts from the SAW franchise as an unknown person turns a series of pranks against the young would-be prankers.

__________

Duckweed

Directed by: Han Han
Runtime: 1hr, 42mins
Comedy
Not Rated
Trailer

Starring: Chao Deng, Eddie Peng, Liying Zhao

Duckweed is a comedy that involves a bit of time travel. However, the fact that Sci-Fi isn't among the genre listings indicates it's more about comedy and character than science. The time travel here allows the central character to go back to the 1990's where he becomes "partners in crime" with his own father. It's a chance to reconcile with him after years of misunderstanding. Perhaps the interesting thing here, for millennials anyway, is the nostalgic look back at the 90's. It wasn't so long ago was it? Yet I can't help looking back on those years fondly.

__________

Havenhurst

Directed by: Andrew C. Erin
Runtime: 1hr, 20mins
Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Not Rated
Trailer

Starring: Julie Benz, Fionnula Flanagan, Belle Shouse,

Perhaps the longer I compile these lists of movies opening every week, the more jaded I become. Every week there's at least a handful of indie horror thrillers that look very similar to the indie horror thrillers that came the week before. Are these doing well? Are people really clamoring for more of these?

__________

Jolly LLB 2

Directed by: Subhash Kapoor
Runtime: 2hrs, 20mins
Comedy, Drama
Not Rated
Trailer

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Sayani Gupta

Jolly LLB 2 is a comedy that satirizes the Indian legal system. In fact, it has caused a controversy for its depiction of the legal system. Nevertheless, it's about a struggling lawyer hoping to make a name for himself. He does eventually get the chance to do so, though not in the way he would have liked, but it pits him against another more powerful, well known, and ruthless lawyer.

__________

Kedi

Directed by: Ceyda Torun
Runtime: 1hr, 20mins
Documentary
Not Rated
Trailer

Starring: Bülent Üstün

Kedi looks to be a charming little documentary following just seven of the hundreds of thousands of cats that roam the streets of Istanbul freely. They claim no owner. As such, they're free to do as they please, but they do make friends with the people of the city.

__________

Land of Mine

Inspired by real events, Land of Mine tells the story of a group of young German POW's captured by the Danish army and forced into the dangerous task of defusing land mines along the Danish coast.

__________

Mahi NRI

Directed by: Gaurav Bavdankar
Runtime: 2hrs, 11mins
Comedy
Not Rated
Trailer

Starring: Hardy Sandhu, Poppy Jabbal, Rameet Kaur

Mahi NRI (Non Resident Indian) deals in the outdated notion among rural Indians that all British Asians are rich and have better lives. It uses this notion for both comedic and dramatic effect. The film follows an Indian singer (Hardy Sandhu) as he tries to move to the UK in order to prove to the mother of his girlfriend that he is worthy of being with her.

__________

Running Wild

Directed by: Alex Ranarivelo
Runtime: 1hr, 39mins
Drama
PG
Trailer

Starring: Sharon Stone, ommy Flanagan, Christina Moore,

This film looks like a jumbled mess, of intersecting storylines and competing tones. Sometimes a talented director and editor can make that work, but rarely does in come together in these small indie productions. There's the widow who finds a group of wild horses who randomly wandered on to her ranch. There's the fact that she might lose her ranch if she can't raise money to save it. In order to do so, she allows convicts onto her property so they can spend time with the horses. That time turns out to be therapeutic for both the convicts and the horses. But then there's Sharon Stone's role in all of this, as the angsty animal rights activist who target's the widowed ranch owner based on claims of horse abuse.

__________
