Opening This Week - September 23

Wide Releases:

The Magnificent Seven

Directed by: Antoine Fuqua
Runtime: 2hrs, 12mins
Action, Western

It wasn't uncommon for 60's westerns to be remakes of Akira Kurosawa films. Now it isn't uncommon for Hollywood to remake popular films of the past. Antoine Fuqua, the director of such films as Training DayTears of the SunKing ArthurShooter, and The Equalizer, utilizes an excellent cast of famous faces to bring back a classic film and, with any luck, reinvigorate the western genre. Admittedly I'm pretty excited for this film. I like the cast, and the genre. However, so far the film has received mixed reviews. The real challenge is whether or not this talented ensemble can manage to create the cinematic legacy of the films it's based on. It may just be there for younger audiences who aren't as familiar with the source material though. We'll have to wait and see.

__________

Storks

Directed by: Nicholas Stoller and Doug Sweetland
Runtime: 1hr, 29mins
Animation, Comedy, Family

Between this film and Pixar's short film "Partly Cloudy," we're getting a more clear picture of the whole storks delivering babies industry. Which is good because we've all been wondering about that since childhood. Seriously though, this film looks like a bit of a mess, but likely an entertaining one as far as family films go.
