Opening This Week - September 2

Wide Releases:

The Light Between Oceans

Directed by: Derek Cianfrance
Runtime: 2hrs, 12mins
Drama, Romance

This is a rare arthouse film that's likely to gain mass appeal. It's based on a successful novel and features big name talents who are already getting Oscar buzz for their performances in this film. Nevertheless, it's Derek Cianfrance, director of Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines, that has me intrigued. Though I do like the actors here as well.

___________

Morgan

Directed by: Luke Scott
Runtime: 1hr, 31mins
Sci-Fi, Mystery, Thriller

Despite some notable talent in smaller roles here, the film is seeing some less than stellar early reviews. Most are calling it a bland take on a very familiar storyline. Mankind becomes intelligent enough to "play God" by creating new life, but soon regrets it. We have seen quite a number of those films - and quite a few strong additions to the genre just last year - so this effort has a lot to live up to. From the sound of it, it fell quite short.
