Opening This Week - August 26

Wide Releases:

Don't Breathe

Directed by: Fede Alvarez
Runtime: 1hr, 28mins
Horror, Thriller

This film looks like it has the potential to be a surprisingly successful crowd pleaser appealing to fans of the genre. So far the mostly positive reviews point to director Fede Alvarez's mastery of tension and misdirection. Even if it's a slightly different version of well tread territory, the promise here is an inventiveness that keeps the film feeling fresh.

Hands of Stone

Directed by: Jonathan Jakubowicz
Runtime: 1h5, 45mins
Biography, Drama

As someone not into the sport of boxing nor up on the history there at all, someone else will have to verify whether this film gets it right. Be forewarned, if you're interested in this film, the trailer seems to show the whole film. Also if you've seen Rocky (who hasn't seen Rocky?), this should look like a very familiar storyline.

Mechanic: Resurrection

Directed by: Dennis Gansei
Runtime: 1hr, 39mins
Action, Thriller

Surprising to see a sequel to an action movie that received mostly mixed reviews, and did nothing of note at the box office. Ebert had this to say of the first film, "Audiences have been drilled to accept noise and movement as entertainment. It is done so well one almost forgets to ask why it has been done at all." Sadly that sentiment applies to much of this year's summer movies. There have been some gems, but the fact that another Mechanic movie can get made and released this summer seems fitting for a surprisingly disappointing summer.
