Opening This Weekend - July 22

Wide Releases:

Star Trek Beyond

Directed by: Justin Lin
Runtime: 2hrs
Action, Sci-Fi

Despite an underwhelming initial trailer, "Star Trek Beyond" has been praised as the "Trekkiest" of the new "Star Trek" films.  With J.J. Abrams having moved on to "Star Wars," "Fast and Furious" director Justin Lin takes the helm and has been given a lot of credit for making this a fun, exciting summer blockbuster. It's also worth mentioning avid "Star Trek" fan Simon Pegg cowrote the script with Doug Jung. They take over for the previous writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. I have enjoyed this rebooted "Star Trek" series but not everyone has been accepting of the new direction. If you find yourself in the latter camp, the shuffle in talent behind the camera and the promise of a "Trekkier" film may just be exactly what you're looking for.

Ice Age: Collision Course

Directed by: Galen T. Chu and Mike Thurmeier
Runtime: 1hr, 34mins
Animation, Comedy

Have there really been five "Ice Age" movies? It seems strange to see a series continue to do so well at the box office and warrant so many sequels considering its continued diminishing critical reception. This latest film has critics in agreement that it may entertain small children with its bright colors and juvenile sense of humor, but it's time to let this series end.

Lights Out

Directed by: David F. Sandberg
Runtime: 1hr, 21mins

As someone not particularly well versed in the horror genre, I'll defer to the generally accepted opinions already out there for this one. The middling reviews agree "Lights Out" doesn't do anything groundbreaking, and its intentional campiness can be a turn off.

Limited Releases:

Absolutely Fabulous

Directed by: Mandie Fletcher
Runtime: 1hr, 30mins

Ab Fab was a popular British TV series in the 90's that found a cult following in the US as well. Now years later they're getting their own movie. The series was known for its many cameos, and the film appears to follow suit. So far the notes from critics are that it won't win any awards, but sometimes light breezy fun is all a movie needs to be. For its intended audience, "Absolutely Fabulous" certainly should brings the laughs.

Don't Think Twice

Directed by: Mike Birbiglia
Runtime: 1hr, 32mins
Comedy, Drama

Train to Busan

Directed by: Sang-ho Yeon
Runtime: 1hr, 58mins
Action, Zombie Thriller
