Opening This Weekend - January 29

Here are the films heading to theaters this week:

Kung Fu Panda 3

This kid friendly, crowd pleasing franchise has been mostly well reviewed, and that seems to be the case with this latest entry as well. So you can feel pretty good about taking the young ones to see what appears to be the first solid, kid friendly animated film to hit theaters in 2016.

The Finest Hours

I can't be sure whether it was a shrewd decision to move the release date from October to January, or if it's a sign film distributors have little confidence in the film. January might be an easier time for success than the busy box office of last October, but it's poor initial reviews certainly won't help. So far the consensus seems to be that The Finest Hours is unremarkable at best.

Fifty Shade of Black

I suppose it was only a matter of time until someone parodied the movie based on the best selling book Fifty Shades of Grey.

Jane Got A Gun (Limited Release)

Sadly the jokes almost write themselves with this one. I'm sure it'll begin and/or end with the Aerosmith song. And this might just be some alternate Star Wars universe in which Padmé Amidala hooks up with her ex-husband Uncle Owen to defend their Tatooine homestead against the evil western Sith Lord Obi-Wan Kenobi. All jokes aside, this first western of the year features Natalie Portman as a strong woman desperate to protect her family against Ewan McGregor's villainous gang. The question is, where is the ad campaign for this movie? I guess westerns are a forgotten genre (unless your name is Tarantino)...
