Opening This Week - January 15

Here are the films opening this week:

Ride Along 2

As if we needed another one of these. The first "Ride Along" was panned by critics and yet made a lot of money against fairly easy competition of the mid-January box office. As such, it makes sense that Universal would approve another one. And the competition is looking fairly similar again, so it has a chance.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Based on the book 13 Hours by Mitchell Zuckoff, this film follows the six members of a security team as they defend the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, following a terrorist attack on the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Perhaps we'll find that Michael Bay works better in serious drama based on real events rather than big budget CGI-fests based on a line of toys. Though there is still the potential for numerous over-the-top explosions he's so enamored by.

Norm of the North

Outside of Disney/Pixar films it's tough to tell which animated features will catch on, but this one looks truly terrible. Just going by the trailer, even the voice work and animation feels subpar. It also gives off the impression of a film done by the numbers right down to the voiceless lemming sidekicks that seem a thinly veiled attempt to set themselves up for spin off films just like the minions from "Despicable Me," and the penguins of the "Madagascar" franchise.
